Getting to my novel.

I’d be lying if I said things were going smoothly. Its nothing I can’t handle or anything out of the ordinary. I’ve just had trouble planning. These kinds of things happen to an artist I feel. One minute an idea is perfect and you plan it out and the execution should not falter but then the idea could come falling about with just a single hiccup. I guess you could say thats whats going on with me. I had a plan and now I’m debating if the story flows. Nonetheless, I am writing. You have to! I really believe that even when nothing is making sense everything will fall into place. Thats what happened in my previous novel and that piece of literature is much more complex than this novel. So I’ll keep writing even if none of it is making sense. I’m sure that near the middle I’ll move some paragraphs around and maybe some chapters and it will all come together smoothly. So thats where I’m at with my novel. Where are you?

Oh, and before I forget don’t forget to keep writing!

Getting to my novel.

I can’t say I’ve done much but I won’t say I’ve done nothing either. I’ve been messing with the first chapter longer then I should but I can’t shake the feeling that it’s missing something. I wouldn’t recommend doing this. I’ve always insisted that getting to the end is important and it is. By getting your manuscript done you can maneuver easier when you have to re-write and edit. In theory everything falls into place but in practice, you sometimes get stuck and even if you move on, you mind will not move forward. The best advice I could give is to satisfy yourself the best you can and move on forward. Work on the sentence, paragraph, or chapter just enough and try to get sucked into it because you’ll never be satisfied. I had to remind myself this. So I’ll leave you with that tip and I’ll do my best to take my own advice.

Getting to my novel 5/28/18

Getting to my novel.

It’s been over a week and few updates have been made to my novel. My main focus right now is how to start. The first sentence and word are important to me. Some of my readers may disagree and suggest that worrying about the little things will make no difference and I would agree if it were the rest of the manuscript but were talking about the beginning sentence. A small detail that will decide whether the reader will continue or not. You’d be surprised how many people decide if their going to read a novel based on the first chapter and even first sentence.  So now the question has been, how to start? Imagery, dialogue, or action. I’ve thought of all the circumstances and I’ve painted different scenarios using all mediums and have finally decided on how to execute the beginning. I think I’ll present my protagonist. This will be the best way to start. I’ve seen others do the complete opposite. They bring the world and the circumstances the character is having to live in before presenting him or her but this is no story about the world but the character and his views on it. I think what I want to do is bring my protagonist to life first before anything else. He will come into existence first and then the world as followed.
